New Year, Same Goals? Here’s the Truth We Avoid

Cover of "Atomic Habits" featuring the subtitle "An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones," highlighting its status as a New York Times Bestseller.

It’s 2026.
Like every new year, I look back and ask myself an honest question:

Did I achieve my goals?

And if I’m being real with myself the answer is uncomfortable.

I’m still overweight.
Financially, I’m not where I want to be.
I’m still not fluent in Spanish.

So the question isn’t “Why didn’t I want it badly enough?”
The real question is:

Why do we keep failing at the same goals every year?

The Wake-Up Moment

On my way back from Vietnam, I passed by a small bookstore at the airport. Something told me to walk in. I picked up a book called Atomic Habits by James Clear.

That book changed everything.

I couldn’t put it down.
Page after page, it felt like someone was finally explaining my life.

And suddenly, it became clear why my goals never turned into reality.

Goals Don’t Fail ,Habits Do

We love setting big goals:

  • Lose weight
  • Get rich
  • Learn a new language
  • Transform our lives
  • But here’s the hard truth:

Your life is not shaped by your goals.
It’s shaped by your daily habits.

If I had gone to the gym 3–4 days a week and eaten clean, I wouldn’t still be struggling with my weight.
If I had consistently attended my Spanish classes and practiced daily, I would be fluent by now.
If I had managed my money with small, disciplined habits, my financial situation would look very different.

The problem was never motivation.
It was inconsistency.

Small Habits Shape Big Results

The book explains something powerful:

You don’t rise to the level of your goals.
You fall to the level of your systems.

Going to the gym once a week doesn’t change your body.
Practicing Spanish once in a while doesn’t change your brain.
Saving money randomly doesn’t change your bank account.

But small actions done daily?
They quietly change everything.

2026 Is Not About Big Promises

This year, I’m not chasing dramatic transformations.
I’m focusing on daily habits.

  • Show up, even when motivation is low
  • Practice, even when progress feels slow
  • Stay consistent, not perfect

Because habits compound.
And who you become is the result of what you do every day, not what you promise yourself on January 1st.

My Message to You

If you feel stuck…
If every year looks the same…
If your goals keep moving to “next year”…

Read Atomic Habits.

Then stop obsessing over goals—and start building habits.

Your future self is created one small action at a time.

✨ New year. New habits. New results. ✨
